Transfusions

What is a transfusion day like? Very long, but at the end, very well worth it! I wake up at around 6:00 am , try to eat something before we leave, and I kiss my big sister, Jacqueleen, and my Abluelita, Nena, goodbye. Once we arrive at UCLA Medical Center , I get my port-a-cath (central line) accessed by my wonderful nurse, Jennifer. She draws blood and sends it to the blood bank. We wait about 2 hours or so until the blood is ready for me to receive. While I wait, I get catered to like a king. My good friend, Adina (child life specialist), plays with me and hangs out with us to make this day a much more pleasant one. I get pre-medicated with Benadryl through my I.V. and with Tylenol orally. Hurray! The blood is here and I am ready to get fueled up. The transfusion takes about 2 hours, which I spend most of asleep. Boy does that Benadryl knock me out! Once its done, I get unhooked, tons of stickers, and a toy from the Treasure Closet. Now its time to schedule my next one in two weeks, give everyone hugs and kisses, and head out to the car to my home
